A collaborative project with Magnum’s Steve McCurry, the exhibit featured artwork by a collective of photographers—Alex Webb, Newsha Tavakolian Trent Parke, Olivia Arthur, Lindokuhle Sobekwa, Cristina de Middel, Nanna Heitmann—selected for the way they capture the many shades of the human condition. Unexpectedly, the images suspended in silky and translucent materials to evoke the sun’s universal appeal as well as tease us to read these images in unexpected ways. There were more subtle surrealist moments elsewhere with materials, color and shape playing tricks with the mind. Californian designer Yves Béhar’s Peaks for furniture brand MOOOI, for instance, is a modular sofa composed of dual triangles interconnected by fabric hinges, which allows them to rotate up or down to create multiple seating arrangements. While Faye Toogood created an intriguing space for Tacchini at Rude Arts Club with her irregular and elliptical shapes, sculptural elements mixed with delicate softness, which blended the British designer’s quirky spirit with fine Italian craftsmanship.

These haute couture furniture collections will showcase Sozzi’s own designs, including the small Battisti tables, which are a tribute to the Dutch painter Piet Mondrian. “Meraviglioso & Meravigliosa” will also welcome the work of Pritzker Prize–winning architect Álvaro Siza, who created three of the pieces of the collection. During design week, Laura Urbinati will partner with floral artist Dylan Tripp to decorate the brand’s headquarters in Viale Col di Lana. The green project will be on display from Monday to Friday and Tripp will use nature as a raw material, combined with the brand’s archival fabrics, to transform the space into an innovative and experimental Garden of Eden creating small botanical worlds based on a modern floral aesthetic.

In the two-level Milan boutique of French luxury fashion house Lanvin, an array of the brand’s colorful Ballerina shoes and one jewel-encrusted Concerto Bag has found a temporary home during Salone del Mobile—all sitting atop sculptural benches and chairs, including one crafted from aluminum by Rooms Studio. Founded in the nation of Georgia by Nata Janberidze and Keti Toloraia in 2007, the architecture and design studio coupled these pieces with tall, slender, rough-hewn lamps with upturned glass shades reminiscent of a closed flower.
“A keepsake for you might be rocks and foraged curiosities, but it could be rare books and photographs for someone else. I wanted to create a collection of crafted leather forms that allow you to store and keep the important things to you,” Henderson said about the lineup. The installation came to life in a theatrical ten-minute sequence as the screen went from sunrise to sunset, and the washi paper inside the sculptures dynamically lit, each performing a unique dance to a bespoke soundtrack by the Japanese musician Keiichiro Shibuya. In Beyond the Horizon the identical sculptures symbolized the “hardware” in the car interface, while the thousand-plus year-old Echizen washi paper suggested the “software” element which would ever-evolve to offer unique in-car experiences tailored to the individual. For the week, Milan simply buzzed with design activity—the vibrant districts of Brera, Tortona and beyond hosting pop-up installations and exhibits, talks and discussions, and with parties flowing into the night. Brands put out their very best show, but mainly Milan Design Week is about the sharing of ideas, and speculating how design can help better shape our lives. For this arty piece showcased at the Rossana Orlandi Gallery, Périlhou partnered with basket weaver Audrey Bruneau, too.
Lanvin selected the two women behind Rooms Studio as design partners to mirror the trailblazing path of founding designer Jeanne Lanvin. Series 08 comprises 100 limited-edition capes-anoraks developed in tandem with three industrial partners, crafted from multiaxial and flexible materials, including linen and a non-woven textile, which are then inkjet-printed and treated with a double lamination of aliphatic polyurethan coating. The outerwear is intended for protective and performance use in such fields as automotive and boating, among other sports. The installation features two areas, an art-like display of 32 capes opposite a video wall giving an abstract interpretation of the collaboration and development process behind the series.

At Alcova, where they showed an outdoor inflatable fountain last year, their pavilion, or “garden house”—also inflatable—lends itself to the leisure of this year’s visitors. Like a bombolono split in half, it’s a much needed dose of levity and hilarity in what for many is the most hectic week of the year. If you’re in the mood for something more stable, there’s always the ceramics they designed with Bitossi Ceramiche, also at Alcova.
Inside the boutique, circular elements crafted using 3D printing techniques will further echo the weave textures of the baskets used to collect the mandarins during the harvest, while Acqua di Parma’s signature Art Deco fragrance bottles will be integrated into the totemic structures. For one, Serapian’s tie-up with Celestino gave way to an armchair elevated by the brand’s signature Mosaico leather weaving technique.
